I Hope You... - Matthew Lunsford
The time I've spent with you has been the best in my life, but now our paths must diverge. I remember all the good times, the laughs and the tears, and of course the dreams. I will never forget you, and I hope you never forget me. But, more importantly, I hope you never forget who you are, the things that make you, you. I hope all the dreams we thought up come true and that you do everything you said you would. I hope that the hard times when you wore so thin were not born in vain to disappear into the night. I hope that, from now on, joyful tears are the only ones that cross your face, and when it's all said and done, I hope you are higher than you ever thought possible. Don't stop until you get there, until you fall asleep in the clouds and dream endless dreams of courage and love until time itself expires. Then you will drift into a place of peacefulness where stars collide and fireflies rein light upon your smiling face so that it appears but in an instant is gone. But, I know it's there: that smiling face. I know that true happiness awaits your faithful smile, and in the midst of the worst, the best I have ever seen shines through in the brightness. I know that hope is strong in your soul, but until that time when our hope will be realized in the fountain of life springing eternally from the depths of paradise, farewell. Just know that you will never be forgotten and as long as I live I will await the day when I smile at you and you at me, and we won't say a word because we both know. We have always known.
So Average - Matthew Lunsford
The thing that is so great about the U.S. is not that we are, for the most part, particularly extraordinary. It is that we have the potential to be extraordinary. That is why immigrants flock to our country. There is hope. But, it seems that very often, especially with younger Americans today, we are content to settle for average when we could be great. It is actually something that high schoolers strive for: to be like everyone else, to reach the status quo but no more. Don’t get me wrong, being average is ok, but not when the bar is set as low as it is today. Greatness comes when we strive for something so large that it makes the extraordinary average. That is when we reach our full potential.
Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble? - Matthew Lunsford
Conviction never felt any stronger
The dead rise but I feel stuck in the ground
And just to think about it ways me down
I cannot take the pain any longer
Real guilt turned false when the sky opens up
Yet to the ground I look for my comfort
And in there I find my home in the dirt
Where I will lie until love lifts me up
Did you feel the mountains tremble under
The weight of my hopes and expectations?
And all good is erased by my blunder
I see it’s a lie, to my elation
That is not what makes the mountains tremble
On seeing this, my hope reassembles
The dead rise but I feel stuck in the ground
And just to think about it ways me down
I cannot take the pain any longer
Real guilt turned false when the sky opens up
Yet to the ground I look for my comfort
And in there I find my home in the dirt
Where I will lie until love lifts me up
Did you feel the mountains tremble under
The weight of my hopes and expectations?
And all good is erased by my blunder
I see it’s a lie, to my elation
That is not what makes the mountains tremble
On seeing this, my hope reassembles

A Drop of Water - Matthew Lunsford
A drop of water falling in a pond
Might make a slight ripple, but in an instant is gone.
And yes, the drop may float up into the sky
Just to fall again, make a ripple, and die.
Conformed to the pattern of so many drops
To form a peaceful body with a smooth, glassy top.
For the ripple that once changed the surface
Is gone in an instant; what is its purpose?
Nothing,
Just to float along until the pond
Dries up, and all the drops are gone.
Why do we fall
When we can fly?
Might make a slight ripple, but in an instant is gone.
And yes, the drop may float up into the sky
Just to fall again, make a ripple, and die.
Conformed to the pattern of so many drops
To form a peaceful body with a smooth, glassy top.
For the ripple that once changed the surface
Is gone in an instant; what is its purpose?
Nothing,
Just to float along until the pond
Dries up, and all the drops are gone.
Why do we fall
When we can fly?
