Private Charles F. Rotenburg - Connor Pompillio

The private arrived at his home in Texas, right after getting home from the Vietnam War. He slowly walked up to his door, thinking of how surprised his wife would be when she sees him. He knocked on his own door at his own home, and a man answered.

“Who are you?” said the private with a confused expression.

The man responded with the same confused tone.

“Who are you?”

From the inside of the house the private heard his wife’s voice. “Honey, who is there?”

The woman approached the door, when Private Rotenburg asked, “Baby… who is this?”

“Charles, I di… I didn’t think you would come back, you were away for so long, I don’t know what to say.”

“Why Rachel, why, I told you I would always come back no matter what; it’s only been one year, Why?”

“I’ve been so lonely while you’ve been away, I needed to move on.”

“While I was fighting for our country, risking my life each and every day for your safety and protection, you were cheating on me?” challenged the private.

“Charles, I moved on, I’m sorry. I love someone else. I’ve already filed the divorce papers.”

The woman gently closed the door and Private Charles F. Rotenburg, steeled against the harsh reality of onrushing pain, stood outside of his own house.
