Number One Fan- Kayla Sami

My parents are divorced and I live with my Mom and Stepdad most of the time. About once a week I go over to my dad’s house. I have two half sisters that live with him and my stepmom. The oldest, Tala, is six and the little one Tannaz is only two. I love both of my sisters equally but Tannaz’s personality is very warm and fuzzy and Tala doesn’t like to show affecrtion. I think that Tannaz and I have a special bond. Ever since she was born we have been inseparable.

As I walk through the door to my Dad’s house I’m greeted with a huge hug and many kisses from my little sister. She clings to me and won’t let me leave her side. She can’t speak English but babbles about in Farsi to me about various things in her day. She then proceeds to pull me into the living room to play with the doll I bought her. While she plays I try to understand what she’s saying with my translation book and she tries to teach me in the way a two year old can.

Later I take her to the park down the street. She brings her dolly in a stroller with her. This is one of our favorite bonding moments. As I help her across the street she resists holding my hand because she thinks she is a big kid and can do it herself. So I pick her up and push the doll stroller with her on my hip. When we get to the park she immediately starts to climb up the jungle gym, ushering me to follow her. She is afraid of the tall slide so I put her in my lap and we ride together. She then stays at the bottom of the slide and tells me to slide down. While I slide down she gets ready to catch me at the bottom. When I reach the bottom of the slide she reaches out and helps me up. As I said she is very caring and will do anything to help me.

At home when I try to play with Tala she constantly begs for my attention. Despite Tala’s protests I hold Tannaz while we play. We play hopscotch and Tannaz gallops down the path. At the end she falls and bangs up her knees. She cries out for me and I take her inside for a Band-Aid and proceed to go back outside when she calls for me to stay with her. When she’s all bandaged we play outside for the rest of the visit.

When it’s time for me to go home Tannaz stands at the door screaming my name and holding on to me so I can’t leave. Her mom pulls her off and she screams and cries as she calls out my name. It breaks my heart to see her like this but I have to leave. She stands at the edge of the door and waves good bye to me as I leave, tears running down her face.

The bond between me and my sister is extremely strong. Even at such a young age she knows I’ll always be there for her in any way I can and I know she’ll do the same for me. The love she has for me is undeniable and the feeling is mutual. My sister will always be my number one fan and I’ll always be hers.
