My Hero- Maggie Melkus

I know it’s your time and I know you must go, but daddy please don’t go. I have come to know what this uniform means; it is a symbol that you are leaving me. This uniform means missed recitals, birthdays, and so many tears. I know it is selfish of me but from the time you kiss my head until I see you again my heart aches to see your face again. When you are gone I miss your big hand surrounding my tiny one. I miss you scratchy beard on my soft face. Most of all I miss you. Every time you turn your back to leave once again the only thing I think is “my hero.” This is why I let you leave because I know every other person standing with me is thinking the same thing. You have to go now daddy. I know this because you have to be someone else’s hero. You have to change the world. But, daddy when you’re done, come back to me.
