Five Scoops - Sabrina Callan
A little girl named Suzie walked into an ice cream shop with her mother. Suzie had curly, orange hair and a pink dress. Suzie’s mother bought her an ice cream cone with five big scoops. They sat at a table as Suzie ate her ice cream. The scoop on top was chocolate. Suzie said to her mother, “Why is the woman at that table the same color as my chocolate ice cream?” And her mother said, “Well Suzie, where her family came from is called Nigeria.”Suzie finished the first scoop. And four scoops were left. The second scoop was peanut butter. Suzie said to her mother, “Why is that boy behind the counter the same color as my peanut butter ice cream?” And her mother said, “Well Suzie, where his family came from is called Brazil.” Suzie finished the second scoop. And three scoops were left. The third scoop was butter pecan. Suzie said to her mother, “Why is the manager the same color as my butter pecan ice cream?” And her mother said, “Well Suzie, where his family came from is called Japan.”Suzie finished the third scoop. And two scoops were left. The fourth scoop was coffee. Suzie said to her mother, “Why is that customer in line the same color as my coffee ice cream?”And her mother said, “Well Suzie, where his family came from is called India.” Suzie finished the fourth scoop of ice cream. And one scoop was left. The very last scoop was vanilla. Suzie said to her mother, “Why do we look like my vanilla ice cream?” And her mother said, “Well Suzie, where our family came from is called Europe.” Suzie finished the very last scoop. And there were no scoops left. Suzie’s cone was empty. She said to her mother, “All these different people live in the same place?” And her mother said, “Yes Suzie. In America people come together from all over the world. And they live together in peace, and freedom. It’s just like the cone that holds all your flavors of ice cream.” Suzie finished her cone. And nothing was left. Suzie and her mother left the ice cream shop. And they waved goodbye to the different people as they went.
