The Beach- Patrick Derrickson

I spent the day at the beach.
Woebegone I was at what I saw.

Children smile, giggle, laugh.
Adults tan and relax and lie.
Spray and surf explode in glee,
Familial in tone--partake as we.

Women pine for a trip to the ocean.
Men lust for their prostrate femininity.
The peak of the year is surrounded in sand,
Not consummate cum contiguous land.

The better the beach, the better the person
In status, in wealth, in utter success.
Don’t you see the mundanity of this ideal?
Define yourself, become real!

Longing should not be for the sand
Or days without care on islands unknown.
Look to the stars for true delight.
Orion, their lies, in all of his might.

As I write this to you I confess
I spent the day… at the beach.
