To Dust- Maddie Lanier

A hero’s size defies the eyes
When looked at from afar.
Only here, as you draw near
Now lies his lion heart.

And on his arm, his sweet bird perched
Beside his gracious soul.
Till Time’s unyielding mighty hand
Brought forth war’s crimson toll.

But from the ash came forth the sun,
New peace brought to the nest.
Blue dreams alive and grace revived
And soon his home was blessed.

He spend his days in kindred keep,
Beside his humble craft.
To each he gave a living face,
And breath to every draft.

And when the earth again beheld
It’s pearly winter throw.
The lion ‘gain rejoined the bird
And danced in heaven’s snow.

His sunset shall be sunrise,
The dawn come from the dusk.
And when first breaks the winter’s morn,
We all return to dust.
