The Boyfriend "Sonnet" - Elaine Rosales

Can he honestly be anymore dim?
You think he’d be smarter to know what’s what.
He promises he’ll call, but then he forgets.
“Oh, did I promise to call?” he asks
The next morning, when he said he would last night.
He says he’ll take me out to make up for it,
But in the end he doesn’t’ show up, call, or text.
I’ve no idea what I saw in him at first,
But he turned out to be a total idiot.
I was ashamed to call him my boyfriend.
So much that I dumped him the very same day.
One day I sat, sulking, hating my life.
When I suddenly heard the door bell ring.
Frustrated, I went to see who it was.
And when I opened the door, I was shocked,
To see my freshman year crush standing there.
He had my favorite flowers in his hand,
And a smile on his face that made me melt.
I invited him to sit on the porch swing.
We talked for a while, and then he said to me,
“I’ve always thought you were beautiful.
I love your smile, your hair, and your eyes.
You’re charismatic and funny too.
I’m sorry you had to go through such stress,
Especially with a jerk like your ex.
You’ve no idea how much you mean to me,
And how much I think of you and about you.
So much, that I think I’m going insane!”
He sighed, then looked up at me with his precious eyes,
In earnest, “Would you be my girlfriend?”
