And so I watched the caged bird fly away
When I knew there was nothing I could do
To convince the caged bird to wait and stay
When his strong tattered wings just needed to
And I will miss his voice when he would sing
And even though he’s free I still will cry
I will see him one day when church bells ring
When I’m free like him together we’ll fly
So he is gone and will never come home
Because he’s found a place where he belongs
And that cage is empty but not alone
Now little birds after him sing his song
I hope so much one day that I can be
Just like that beautiful bird, wild and free
